My Year in Fic
Dec. 21st, 2018 08:14 pmI did something like this last year on tumblr, and I thought it would be nice to do again. My word count on ao3 this year is the lowest it has been since I started writing (9188), but I wrote a few things I'm proud of. Here's to writing more in the new year!
the sweetest hell I've had - House MD - House/Wilson - 437 words
Nothing's ever as simple as you think it is.
I published this in April, and I hadn't written anything since November. It's a rewrite of a scene from the third season - none of my own dialogue, just narration. I had fun writing it, although I'm pretty sure the gdoc I wrote in is called "you stupid bitch."
never thought i'd fall - Harry Potter - Ginny/Luna - 432 words
Ginny has never let herself dream of a girl.
I'm pretty sure I actually wrote this in 2017, and for some reason only published it to fanfiction.net at the time. For a few months in 2017 I was very involved in fanfiction.net Harry Potter forum challenges (lol) which resulted in about 15 works.
when the lights go out - It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia - Dee/Waitress - 1028 words
based on this prompt: "Dee and the Waitress accidentally run into each other at a lesbian bar. They're both very flustered because they didn't want anyone to know they were both questioning their sexuality."
This was written Always Sunny Rarepairs 2: Electric Boogaloo, and I'm really happy with how it turned out! It was fun to write such an abrasive protagonist as Dee. I wrote this right after spring semester ended, I guess I finally had the mental energy to put something together. (I feel similarly now that fall semester is over. I've written 3k words in the past 2 days.)
cross all the land and sea - Arrested Development - Gob/Tony - 4229 words
“You really need me to connect these dots for you, Mike? And people always said you were the smart brother. Tony is on the run from the law, and he can’t tell me where because the feds are listening, but he left me this clue and he wants me to find him.”
This is probably the fic I'm most proud of writing this year. I was impatient to publish it before leaving for my job as a sleepaway camp counselor (and before I guessed season 5B might come out on the 2nd of July), and looking back, it's not perfect, but I'm really happy with the arc I ended up writing, and the jokes. It's also one of the longest complete stories I've written.
stranger than fiction - American Vandal - Peter/Sam - 451 words
Oh my god, dude, you’re never gonna believe this...
This is purely based on real-life events, and because of that I don't think it's.... of the highest quality. I think it's decently funny, but says nothing about the characters. Although I'm glad that I wrote it; I posted it in November, and hadn't written anything else since June. It at least served its purpose of getting me back in the mood to write.
Redemption for Beginners - Community - Dean Pelton/Dean Spreck - 746 words
Dean Spreck is going through some old boxes at his mom's house and comes upon his old diary from Dean Camp, a summer camp for boys who aspired to become bald community college deans. It makes him reconsider some things.
I actually wrote this as an assignment for a creative writing class I took senior year of high school, and had posted to tumblr but for some reason not ao3. We did a brief unit on fanfiction at the end of the semester.... I was taking it as an independent study, so glad not to have had to be in the classroom that day. The assignment was to write a redemption for a villain, so I chose Dean Spreck. It was so much fun to write in his voice. (I think the final project I turned in for that class was a Shadowhunters Worst Cooks in America AU. Wow.)
I also have written things for Yuletide (my assignment and a treat!) but can't give any details on that now ofc :)
ETA: I ended up writing an Arrested Development Marta/Lindsay fic with my friend Dee, bringing my yearly word count up to 15891 and my all-time word count over 100,000!
