Dear Yuletide Author,

Thanks in advance for writing for me! I’m firstlovelatespring on ao3. I decided to go for a bit of a theme this year — I’m requesting Moneyball (2011), The Natural - Bernard Malamud, and New York Mets RPF.

For all my requests, I’m generally very interested in the setting of baseball. Go ahead and ascribe emotional meaning to baseball actions and all that. What I’m not really interested in is stories about coming out or being outed, to the public or to team members. I don’t mind if a teammate or two is aware of the situation, I just don’t want this to be the focus of the story.

Things I like:

Happy endings, unhappy endings, ambiguous endings

Getting together, breaking up, established relationship, relationship firsts, pre-relationship

Third or first person point of view

Pining of any flavor, including unrequited

Antagonistic or competitive relationships

5 times

Forced proximity, from “having to play on the same team” to “being stuck in an elevator together”

I’m not really interested in PWP, but I don’t mind the presence/absence of smut in general. For these fandoms, I’m more interested in the emotional meaning of sex scenes than in any particular details.

DNW
Setting-change AUs (i.e., making them not in baseball)
Death of requested characters (except Roy Hobbs)

Moneyball (2011)
Billy Beane, Peter Brand

The book Moneyball is about the art of winning an unfair game. The movie Moneyball is about that too, but it is also about the love story between Billy Beane and Peter Brand. I love them as an unlikely duo that are forced to work together, to great success and begrudging mutual fondness. Moneyball is also the first movie where I fully understood the appeal of Brad Pitt. What’s sexier than sabermetrics?

I’d love missing scenes or anything canon-typical for them. I also think 5 times would work particularly well here, with all the repetitiveness of the baseball season, 162 variations on a theme.

The Natural - Bernard Malamud
Roy Hobbs

Now, I put in an exception to my death DNW for Roy Hobbs because you can do anything you like to him, up to and including death. He’s been through a lot.

In terms of prompts for this book... anything, really. Subject Roy to more events and ailments. Kill him, injure him, break his heart. Have him fix things with Memo and end up deeply miserable behind a white picket fence. Or, maybe fill in some of the time between when he got shot and when he ended up on the Knights?

The one thing I’m not so interested is fix-it fic; I think Roy is really defined as a character by this inability to grow up, being physically 35 but still kind of frozen at 18. So like... he can evolve into having new miseries. But let the man be miserable.

New York Mets RPF
Jeff McNeil, Francisco Lindor

When Jeff McNeil was called up, I fell for his shaggy hair and high batting average. He quickly became one of my favorite players, despite his squirrelish looks.

I was a little more skeptical about Francisco Lindor. I’m always skeptical about huge, long-term free agent deals, and I’d never even heard of this guy before, him having been in the American League. Well… that skepticism didn’t even last until the end of spring training. He won me over by the end of a single in-game interview. Gary Cohen called him effervescent, and I agreed.

The rat or raccoon argument of 2021 was what got me thinking about this ship, instead of just separately enjoying my favorite players. What were they really arguing about in the tunnel? I'd love to read the fallout from that, or anything leading up to it.

I’d also love to read moments during the season, in the dugout or on an airplane, or hanging around during a rainout. I could buy them having a somewhat difficult relationship, especially in 2021. Or having a sort of normal and boring dislike for each other. Or one being totally indifferent, while the other is privately pining. I really don’t mind if you don’t get them together, whether that’s gen, pre-slash, pining, rejection, etc.

So, they’re both married. Any of these options for dealing with that is fine with me: not mentioning it either way, explicitly pretending they were never married, or including angst about cheating. What I don’t want is a big presence of the wife (or kids) in the story, or a story that ends with either of them planning to break off the marriage. I also don’t really like an acknowledged arrangement where the wife knows about things with other players and is cool with it. Basically, you don’t have to mention infidelity, but if you do, I want the guy to feel bad about it.

comments

DNW
More than canon-level allusion to pregnancy, character death, suicide or self-harm, eating disorders. Non-con, kidfic. M/M or F/M explicit sex. PDA in front of family, or any over the top PDA at all. Non-canonical nicknames/pet names.

5 times, getting together, revealing a relationship to friends/coworkers, fake dating, mentions of baseball, secret relationship, missing scenes, casefic, other canon-typical shenanigans and/or hijinks.

Also, if you’re writing slash or femslash, I generally prefer the characters to have already come out (at least to themselves) and for feelings for a specific person to be the internal conflict, not feelings for someone of the same gender in general.

Dear Netflix Originals Exchange author,

Thanks for writing for me! My ao3 is firstlovelatespring and I'm very much looking forward to whatever you write. I'm requesting American Vandal, Arrested Development, and GLOW. I've included a lot of specific prompts, but feel free to take or leave what you like. Be advised, this letter contains spoilers for GLOW season 3!

DNW: More than canon-level allusion to pregnancy, character death, suicide or self-harm, sexual assault. PDA in front of family, or any over the top PDA at all. Pure fluff or non-canonical nicknames/pet names.

General likes: 5 times, getting together, revealing a relationship to friends/coworkers, fake dating, secret relationship, casefic, other canon-typical shenanigans and/or hijinks.

It's the longest piece of fanfiction (maybe the longest piece of writing) I've ever finished, and I'm pretty happy with how it turned out. I've been working on it since December, and I took the time to work with my beta to make a lot of improvements - basically, I've never been this patient with writing in my life. I probably could have been a little more patient and fleshed out some scenes even more, but I'm okay with taking things in steps. That's what my next project is for :D

comments

I did something like this last year on tumblr, and I thought it would be nice to do again. My word count on ao3 this year is the lowest it has been since I started writing (9188), but I wrote a few things I'm proud of. Here's to writing more in the new year!

the sweetest hell I've had - House MD - House/Wilson - 437 words
Nothing's ever as simple as you think it is.
I published this in April, and I hadn't written anything since November. It's a rewrite of a scene from the third season - none of my own dialogue, just narration. I had fun writing it, although I'm pretty sure the gdoc I wrote in is called "you stupid bitch."

never thought i'd fall - Harry Potter - Ginny/Luna - 432 words
Ginny has never let herself dream of a girl.
I'm pretty sure I actually wrote this in 2017, and for some reason only published it to fanfiction.net at the time. For a few months in 2017 I was very involved in fanfiction.net Harry Potter forum challenges (lol) which resulted in about 15 works.

when the lights go out - It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia - Dee/Waitress - 1028 words
based on this prompt: "Dee and the Waitress accidentally run into each other at a lesbian bar. They're both very flustered because they didn't want anyone to know they were both questioning their sexuality."
This was written Always Sunny Rarepairs 2: Electric Boogaloo, and I'm really happy with how it turned out! It was fun to write such an abrasive protagonist as Dee. I wrote this right after spring semester ended, I guess I finally had the mental energy to put something together. (I feel similarly now that fall semester is over. I've written 3k words in the past 2 days.)

cross all the land and sea - Arrested Development - Gob/Tony - 4229 words
“You really need me to connect these dots for you, Mike? And people always said you were the smart brother. Tony is on the run from the law, and he can’t tell me where because the feds are listening, but he left me this clue and he wants me to find him.”
This is probably the fic I'm most proud of writing this year. I was impatient to publish it before leaving for my job as a sleepaway camp counselor (and before I guessed season 5B might come out on the 2nd of July), and looking back, it's not perfect, but I'm really happy with the arc I ended up writing, and the jokes. It's also one of the longest complete stories I've written.

stranger than fiction - American Vandal - Peter/Sam - 451 words
Oh my god, dude, you’re never gonna believe this...
This is purely based on real-life events, and because of that I don't think it's.... of the highest quality. I think it's decently funny, but says nothing about the characters. Although I'm glad that I wrote it; I posted it in November, and hadn't written anything else since June. It at least served its purpose of getting me back in the mood to write.

Redemption for Beginners - Community - Dean Pelton/Dean Spreck - 746 words
Dean Spreck is going through some old boxes at his mom's house and comes upon his old diary from Dean Camp, a summer camp for boys who aspired to become bald community college deans. It makes him reconsider some things.
I actually wrote this as an assignment for a creative writing class I took senior year of high school, and had posted to tumblr but for some reason not ao3. We did a brief unit on fanfiction at the end of the semester.... I was taking it as an independent study, so glad not to have had to be in the classroom that day. The assignment was to write a redemption for a villain, so I chose Dean Spreck. It was so much fun to write in his voice. (I think the final project I turned in for that class was a Shadowhunters Worst Cooks in America AU. Wow.)

I also have written things for Yuletide (my assignment and a treat!) but can't give any details on that now ofc :)

ETA: I ended up writing an Arrested Development Marta/Lindsay fic with my friend Dee, bringing my yearly word count up to 15891 and my all-time word count over 100,000!

comments

Hi yuletide writer!

I'm Sarah (driedflowers on ao3, bethecowgirl on tumblr). This is my first year participating in yuletide so I hope this letter is alright! I'm super excited for whatever you write for me but I do of course have a few comments. My biggest request is something in the same tone as the source material. Something in script format would be cool but either way I would prefer something relatively light and plot-heavy over something very introspective and focused a lot on a character's thoughts. Some other general tropes I like are 5+1, missing scenes, revealing a relationship to friends/coworkers, and get-togethers.

In terms of general DNW.... porn isn't my first choice honestly but if that's where your inspiration takes you I'd say just keep it pretty vanilla lol. DNW any slash or het porn but femslash is ok. Also, please no character death, suicide, self harm, or eating disorders. If any of that occurs in canon it's fair game but either way I don't want any of those to be the focus of the fic (GLOW being the exception, see below). I'm also generally not a fan of AUs. And I know this is a yuletide exchange but please no Christmas fic.

Powerless

I love the light tone of Powerless and definitely felt like the canon was moving towards a love triangle between Green Fury, Emily, and Teddy. I would love something about that love triangle, with Teddy or Emily being jealous. Or I would also love something that's just Emily/Green Fury. Maybe something about having to do with Emily and Green Fury saving each other's lives in a variety of zany ways..... I love the backdrop of superheroes. Another thing I would really love to read is Emily introducing Green Fury as her girlfriend to her coworkers at a work party. I prefer endgame Emily/Green Fury but I also think Emily/Teddy can be cute so whichever you prefer really.

American Vandal

I binged this show in the beginning of October and I loved it! I'd prefer a work set during season 1, and something I would really love is canon divergence where Sam and Peter get together while filming the documentary, or have been together the entire time and are just subtle about it (although if you do write something with established relationship i'm not really into pure fluff). Right now I'm very into fics in the tone of the original source material so something in the same format / with the same energy as the show would blow me away! I would also love a fic of several missing scenes between scenes of the show that fill in the details of their relationship. Oh or also.... maybe something where Peter is looking through the footage as he's editing and realizing through that that he has feelings for Sam, with, like, cut scenes written in between, if that makes sense? Really anything about getting together would make me very happy. Also any type of casefic would be really fun! Something from a hypothetical season 3, or even just small mysteries. Another specific prompt I have for this is based around the "case" Sam made against Peter lol. I really thought that was going to be the show's gross teenage boy way of revealing Peter's sexuality which is honestly an understandable mistake even without gay characters goggles so it would be cool to read something where instead of saying Ashley Hansen, Sam says the name of some random guy and actually surprise Peter was out gay the whole time! And just like some other scenes where that comes up. Could end up gen or slash.

For this show I have an extra DNW which is that I would prefer if you don't refer to him as "Pete" a lot and mostly use "Peter" unless it's especially important that you use the short form. This is just because that's my dad's name lol. Also, please nothing rated above a high T.

GLOW

I watched GLOW for the first time in September and as soon as I finished I started again from episode 1. I don't usually like dramas but I just fell in love with the characters and the wrestling storylines! I'd love something that worked with/around the main plot about the actual wrestling show. It's not necessary to include all the characters and I'd be equally happy to receive something Ruth/Debbie or Arthie/Yolanda or gen so do what you will.

For Debbie/Ruth I would like something in set in about the middle of the series, when they're not fighting so intensely any more but still are kind of mad at each other. Like, the angry energy turns into chemistry, that type of thing. Or also something when they're friends would be good, but either set before things get weird between Ruth and Sam or just ignoring Ruth/Sam entirely. I would also love something in which Ruth confronts Debbie about sabotaging her relationship with the cameraman who I can't remember the name of and they get into a fight and Debbie admits she was doing it because she's jealous of him and all that comes out. Honestly Debbie/Ruth can be requited or not for any scenario you choose, and they don't necessarily have to end up together.

For Arthie/Yolanda I would love a missing scenes fic, or really just anything more about how they developed feelings for each other and got together! The show left a lot of blanks to be filled in for them. Also Arthie coming to terms with her sexuality would be great. For this pairing I really just want a happy ending.

Finally if you're interested in writing gen I think it would be very interesting to read something about Debbie's relationship with food + body image over the years. However if you have no experience or way too much experience in this area I ofc get if you don't want to write about it and will be equally happy with anything else suggested here! Another gen thing that might be nice is Ruth celebrating Hanukkah. I definitely don't see her as religious enough to go to shul (especially not on Hanukkah) but I can imagine her lighting the menorah and maybe calling her parents, especially if she's upset over wrestling or over her relationship with Debbie.

Thanks in advance!

comments
